TOPIC:

Fighting Patent Trolls: Tales from the Trenches (aka "CSI: Yaletown - Presenting Technical Evidence in Court")

PRESENTER:

Rob Slade (B.Sc., M.S.)

ABSTRACT

Lawyers are different from us geeks. We usually hear this type of thing from lawyers who want us to do things their way. Since I'm a geek, I present from our point of view, and try and explain the things they usually don't. This presentation will cover legal concepts relating to infosec, rules of evidence, and managing forensics and investigation. I'll even throw in a few war stories from fighting patent trolls.

BIOGRAPHY

Rob Slade wrote "Software Forensics," and therefore is probably illegal. He was once denied a visa to enter the US, and has been fingerprinted. Twice. He has, however, officially been granted clearance to work with vulnerable people and at risk youth, which really makes you wonder about the value of criminal records checks. He  *really* hates patent trolls.
More information on him is available at:
Wikipedia , http://victoria.tc.ca/int-grps/books/techrev/rms.htm , or Flickr . His blogs are at SecuriTeam , 0x90 , and ITsecurity .
